Lori is a 70 year old female who is in the hospital due to feeling short of breath. She called the ambulance because it became severe. She sees a family doctor for her high blood pressure and high cholesterol. When she arrived to the emergency department, her heart rate began to go very high and she was admitted into the ICU.

Learning Objectives

  1. Recognize the signs and symptoms of atrial fibrillation with rapid ventricular response
  2. Conduct a focused cardiovascular and respiratory assessment, including telemetry interpretation and hemodynamic monitoring.
  3. Identify AFib with RVR on a telemetry strip or ECG and understand the implications for perfusion and cardiac output.
  4. Implement and prioritize nursing interventions
  5. Communicate critical changes to the provider or rapid response team using SBAR and closed-loop communication.
  6. Educate the patient (as appropriate) on AFib, potential triggers, anticoagulation therapy, and long-term management strategies.
