Olivia Johnson is a 40 year old female who came to the hospital because of passing out. She is being treated for her anxiety and anorexia nervosa. She is very defensive about her condition and gets angry when having to talk about it.

Learning Objectives

  1. Recognize signs and symptoms of acute anxiety,
  2. Establish a therapeutic nurse-patient relationship through active listening, empathy, and validation of the patient’s emotional experience.
  3. Apply therapeutic communication techniques, such as grounding, open-ended questions, reflection, and calm reassurance to reduce anxiety.
  4. Assess the patient’s level of anxiety (mild, moderate, severe, panic) and determine appropriate interventions.
  5. Administer anxiolytic medications safely, and monitor for effectiveness and side effects.
  6. Document behavioral observations, medication administration, and communication strategies used.
  7. Collaborate with the healthcare team to address emotional safety and provide continuity of mental health care during hospitalization.

  2. Utilize therapeutic communication techniques to help the patient de-escalate in real-time.
  3. Safely administer prescribed anxiolytics or antidepressants and observe for side effects such as sedation or hypotension.
  4. Create a calming environment by minimizing stimulation and demonstrating a confident, steady presence.
  5. Educate the patient (when appropriate) on medication purpose, effects, and non-pharmacological coping strategies for anxiety.
