Key Details

The Patient

Harry is a 65 year old male brought to the ER by ambulance after being found confused and lethargic at home by his daughter. Has been urinating frequently and very thirsty for the past four days. Reports blurry vision, weakness, and a dull headache but no nausea or vomiting. He says he hasn't been eating much and missed his diabetes medication because he was feeling "off."

The Environment

Inpatient Hospital Room

Learning Objectives

  1. By the end of the simulation, the student will accurately assess and recognize signs and symptoms of hypokalemia
  2. Within 15 minutes of receiving lab results indicating hypokalemia, the student will initiate appropriate nursing interventions, including continuous cardiac monitoring, potassium replacement per provider order
  3. By the end of the simulation, the student will demonstrate safe potassium administration, including IV vs. oral route selection, proper dilution of IV potassium, infusion rate adherence
  4. Before the end of the simulation debrief, the student will educate the patient on causes, prevention, and dietary sources of potassium

Competencies

  1. Demonstrate accurate assessment and early recognition of hypokalemia using patient history, physical exam findings, and lab results.
  2. Prioritize interventions to prevent complications, including ECG monitoring, fall precautions, and electrolyte replacement.
  3. Safely administer and monitor potassium replacement therapy according to hospital protocols and patient safety standards.
  4. Educate the patient on risk factors, dietary modifications, and medication adherence to prevent recurrent hypokalemia.
