Key Details

The Patient

Michael Johnson is a patient currently in the hospital. He suffers from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

The Environment

Inpatient Hospital Room

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify the components of a basic musculoskeletal assessment, including inspection, palpation, range of motion (ROM), strength testing, and gait evaluation.
  2. Perform a focused musculoskeletal assessment of major joints and muscle groups, noting symmetry, tone, and strength.
  3. Assess active and passive range of motion (ROM) in upper and lower extremities and describe limitations or discomfort.
  4. Evaluate muscle strength bilaterally using a standardized scale (e.g., 0 to 5 strength grading scale).
  5. Inspect for signs of musculoskeletal dysfunction, including swelling, deformity, redness, contractures, or limited mobility.
  6. Use therapeutic communication techniques to guide the patient through the exam while ensuring comfort and safety.
  7. Document musculoskeletal findings using accurate clinical language and appropriate charting format.

Competencies

  1. Demonstrate proper technique in inspecting joints and muscles for size, alignment, and symmetry.
  2. Assess and document range of motion (ROM) and strength in shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, and ankles.
  3. Identify and describe any abnormal findings such as joint stiffness, weakness, contractures, or asymmetry.
  4. Communicate clearly with the patient to maintain comfort, explain procedures, and identify any reported pain or difficulty.
  5. Record assessment findings concisely and accurately in a narrative or flow-sheet format.
