Cystic Fibrosis

Amelia Donald is a 12 year old female who is admitted into the hospital as a patient. She suffers from cystic fibrosis She recently was diagnosed with pneumonia which led to his admission into the hospital. She is anxious with all of the uncertainty.

Inpatient Hospital Room

1. Recognize the signs and symptoms of cystic fibrosis exacerbation
2. Perform a comprehensive respiratory and nutritional assessment
3. Administer prescribed treatments, including airway clearance therapy
4. Monitor for response to therapy and signs of respiratory decline or gastrointestinal complications.
5. Implement infection prevention protocols, including contact precautions and minimizing cross-contamination between CF patients.
6. Use therapeutic communication to educate the patient and caregiver about home care routines, medication adherence, and nutritional support.
7. Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team

1. Identify and document respiratory and gastrointestinal symptoms associated with CF exacerbation.
2. Safely administer and evaluate the effectiveness of CF-specific therapies (e.g., albuterol, dornase alfa, pancreatic enzymes).
3. Conduct or coordinate airway clearance interventions and monitor for changes in respiratory status.
4. Educate caregivers on CF home care management, including infection control, nutrition, and medication regimens.
5. Use developmentally appropriate communication to reduce anxiety and engage the pediatric patient in their care.
6. Accurately document assessments, interventions, and patient responses in the EMR and escalate care when necessary.
