Epiglottitis

Emory Davis is a 7 year old male who is admitted into the hospital as a patient. He recently became sick and was diagnosed with pneumonia which led to his admission into the hospital. He is anxious with all of the uncertainty.

Inpatient Hospital Room

1. Recognize the signs and symptoms of epiglottitis in a child
2. Avoid actions that could worsen airway obstruction
3. Perform a focused pediatric respiratory assessment
4. Prioritize airway safety and activate the appropriate emergency response
5. Use calm, developmentally appropriate communication to reduce child anxiety and maintain airway stability.
6. Provide emotional support and clear communication to the caregivers while managing this high-stress, time-sensitive emergency.

1. Rapidly identify clinical signs of suspected epiglottitis and prioritize airway management without causing distress.
2. Avoid unnecessary interventions that could worsen the child’s condition
3. Administer supplemental oxygen in a non-invasive and non-threatening manner as tolerated by the child.
4. Collaborate with the interprofessional team to ensure airway stabilization, medication administration, and safe transfer to higher level care.
5. Support and update the child’s caregivers with calm, concise communication and reassurance during the emergency.
6. Document all assessments, interventions, and communications clearly and accurately in the EMR.
