Key Details

The Patient

Sasha Tran is a 30 year old female who is 32 weeks pregnant and is now in active labor. She is worried about the health of her baby. This is her first pregnancy and just hopes everything goes well.

The Environment

Inpatient Hospital Room

Learning Objectives

  1. Within 5 minutes of simulation start, conduct a focused assessment including maternal vital signs, fetal heart rate monitoring, contraction patterns, and cervical dilation to determine the severity of preterm labor.
  2. Within 10 minutes, correctly administer appropriate interventions (e.g., IV fluids, tocolytics, corticosteroids for fetal lung maturity, and positioning) based on provider orders and current preterm labor protocols.
  3. Using SBAR (Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation) format, effectively communicate maternal and fetal status to the healthcare team within 3 minutes of recognizing a change in condition.
  4. Before simulation completion, educate the patient and support person on preterm labor warning signs, potential complications, and next steps in care, ensuring the patient verbalizes at least two key takeaways.

Competencies

  1. Students will accurately assess and interpret maternal vital signs, fetal heart rate patterns, contraction frequency, and cervical status, ensuring early recognition of preterm labor indicators.
  2. Students will demonstrate the ability to initiate appropriate interventions, including medication administration (tocolytics, corticosteroids, IV fluids), maternal positioning, and oxygen therapy, while adhering to clinical protocols.
  3. Students will use SBAR communication to relay critical maternal and fetal information to the provider and healthcare team, ensuring timely decision-making and intervention.
  4. Students will provide clear, evidence-based education on preterm labor risks, management, and follow-up care while offering emotional support to reduce patient anxiety and enhance understanding.
