Suicidal Screening

Emma Miller is a 40 year old female who came to the hospital because of suicidal thoughts. She was brought to the hospital for a psychiatric evaluation and monitoring for her safety. She is depressed and has no interest in living anymore.

Inpatient Hospital Room

1. By the end of the simulation, the student will accurately perform a suicide risk assessment using a standardized screening tool (e.g., Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale) and identify three key warning signs of suicidal ideation in a simulated patient with 100% accuracy.
2. During the simulation, the student will demonstrate active listening and use at least three therapeutic communication techniques to engage with a simulated patient in five minutes or less.
3. By the end of the simulation, the student will determine the suicide risk on the patient and showcase understanding of next steps towards the patient's care plan.
4. Upon completion of the simulation, the student will correctly identify and verbalize at least two community resources that are appropriate for a patient at moderate or high risk for suicide.

1. Demonstrate proficiency in using a suicide risk assessment tool
2. Effectively engage patients in a therapeutic conversation to assess suicide risk and determine appropriate interventions.
3. Implement immediate safety interventions such as patient monitoring, environmental safety modifications, and escalation to mental health professionals.
4. Educate patients and families on suicide prevention resources and post-crisis support systems.
